LOS ANGELES - July 6, 2006 - Junior Achievement of Southern California (JA) led twelve 11th and 12th grade students from Grant High School, Valley Village (Van Nuys) on a “job shadowing” trip to the construction sites of The South Group’s residential buildings in development in downtown L.A. early this summer.
The South Group’s architects, construction and project managers and developers eagerly described their particular tasks pertinent to building the company’s three (Elleven, Evo, Luma) new residences, with the considerable details that the enterprise entails.
“The experience is mutually beneficial,” said Jim Atkins of The South Group. “While we’re inspired to do this as a community service, we also hope talented young people will become successful building industry professionals - and add to the merits of our industry.”
“All my speeches about how accounting, for instance, is a valuable class were proven to the students to be true,” said teacher Steve Kent. “Construction - or development - is the perfect area of industry to examine in business class, because it deals with so many critical areas of enterprise and skills - from math to architecture, to many aspects of building technology, sales and marketing, and surely accounting.”
