LOS ANGELES - April 11, 2007 - The South Group, a downtown Los Angeles collaboration between Portland, Oregon’s Gerding Edlen Development Co. and Williams & Dame Development, is taking sustainability to new heights in the West.

Gerding Edlen recently received two landmark sustainability awards from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the national governing body of sustainable design, for one of its newest Portland developments – the Center for Health & Healing at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

“At the USGBC, our mission is to help America’s cities embrace and enact green development. The dedication and creativity we see in Portland makes our job a little easier. Typically it’s the long-term energy cost savings that catch people’s attention, but the popularity of neighborhoods like South Waterfront exemplifies how a sustainable building approach also makes for a more livable community,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chairman of the USGBC.

Tom Cody, principal of Gerding Edlen and The South Group, said, “This prestigious designation reflects our ambitious longstanding commitment to build the nation’s finest sustainable structures, as well as create vibrant urban communities. We’re excited to be currently applying a lot of these same environmentally-friendly building practices to new projects such as South in downtown Los Angeles.”

Gerding Edlen and Williams & Dame’s progressive approach to urban living is currently taking shape under The South Group name at “South,” a modern new high-rise community in downtown Los Angeles’ South Park neighborhood consisting of buildings Elleven, Luma and Evo. They’re expected to be the first LEED-certified residential buildings downtown.

The 412,000-square-foot Center for Health & Healing is the first large medical and research building in the country to earn a LEED Platinum rating from the USGBC and one of only 30 buildings in the country to win such recognition. The building is 60% more energy efficient than required by Oregon code, and uses 56% less potable water than a conventional building of similar size.

Fedrizzi also presented a special USGBC Leadership in Sustainability Award to Bob Gerding and Mark Edlen of Gerding Edlen Development in recognition of the firm’s commitment to sustainable building practices in projects up and down the West Coast.

“The Center for Health & Healing is a significant accomplishment for green building, with its scale, complexity of use and pioneering technology,” said Mark Edlen, founder and principal of Gerding Edlen. “Even as we reach milestones like this, we’re constantly looking for the next evolution of sustainability. We have a five-year goal to create buildings that produce more energy than they consume, and consume more waste than they produce.”

Elleven, South’s first residential tower completed in April 2006, will receive at least a Silver LEED certification from the USGBC this summer, followed by Luma (scheduled for completion this spring) and Evo (under construction and scheduled for completion in spring 2008).

In addition to incorporating innovative green building practices and materials into South, The South Group is helping transform LA’s urban core into a 24-hour neighborhood of pedestrian paths, park space, gardens and a lively streetscape of retail shops and services.

Similarly, Gerding Edlen has contributed to Portland’s burgeoning sustainable building industry in recent years, turning the vacant Blitz-Weinhard Brewery into the Brewery Blocks and renovating the historic Portland Armory into the Platinum-certified Gerding Theater for Portland Center Stage. The Armory is the first building on the National Register of Historic Places to achieve a LEED Platinum rating.
